A Sceptical Medium Lorraine HollowayWhite 9781446634523 Books Reviews
Very refreshing to read an honest book. I had worried that I was doing things wrong but this book put my mkind completely at ease. Thank you.
Lorraine is one of those women who never stops. Never. She's either writing, talking about writing, encouraging others to write or encouraging others to encourage each other. That kind of attitude shines in her book, "A Sceptical Medium."
She explains to us, in very plain language, what it is like to be in your hotel room and having an insistent visitor who also happens to be dead. She also explains the difference between being a medium because it is a gift given to you, a natural medium -- and being one who attempts to "learn" the gift. She warns us, in no uncertain terms, that there are people out there perfectly willing to take advantage of something she sees as her ability to help other human beings. She also warns that dabbling in things that you do not understand or unable to understand can let loose mischief where only healing should have occurred.
This is a good book if you want to find out what it's like to be a medium. It's from a teacher who is in the midst of her journey and looking both inward and outward to try and explain "why" this occurred in her living. My five stars are for that intent and the price that it cost her to publicize her knowledge.
I was very disappointed in this book and I question why someone publishes a blog in book format. To my reasoning, a blog is an individual's view of their world on any given day but this is a continual repetition of nothing of much substance relating to the title. Being a sceptical Medium myself I had hoped this book would help me reflect on my own Spiritual and Mediumistic journey and my own scepticism or questioning of my Mediumistic abilities.
There is much of concern in this book; firstly much of the content appears to be un-researched, particularly in regards to the Spiritualist Philosophy. Secondly to encourage young or inexperienced mediums to work on their own, trusting solely on the guidance of spirit entities can have disastrous consequences for the untrained.
Without training how do those whose Mediumistic abilities have just been opened know what level of discarnate spirit they are working with? How to they know whether their information is Psychic or from Spirit? How can they tell whether their spirit visitor has actually passed or is still in the physical world? How do they know how to open and close when working with spirit? How can an untrained Medium know whether their Spirit visitor needs help to move from the Astral into the Spirit Realms? How do they know when to say "Stop, I'm not working now"?
I have been guided by those in the Spirit Realms to people who could help me discover and develop my inherent Mediumship potential. Without this guidance and without having someone to call on to help explain some of the experiences I have had could have left me in an extremely confused and dire state.
I would like to see the writer research more fully some of the topics covered and I would suggest a good starting point might be to find out more about the Spiritualist Philosophy of which she is most vehemently opposed. I agree there is much about Mediumship training that needs changing and I believe this is because so few these days take the time to learn and understand where their information is coming from.
Further on in this book the writer has made general statements that platform demonstrations are no longer appropriate for Mediums. What they fail to point out is that Mediums work differently and while one may focus on platform work, another's skill may be that of spirit portraiture, or private sittings or healing. The writer also appears to have missed the point that a Mediums Mediumship faculties are likely to change throughout the course of their journey depending on how those in Spirit decide they can best use the Medium. So while platform demonstrations may no longer be right for the writer they certainly still have their place and anyone reading this book who is working as a platform medium should not be swayed or anxious about these statements and would do well to continue until they find themselves steered in a different direction by those in Spirit. Remember, giving a TRUE and HONEST spirit communication/demonstration can be very reassuring and healing to the recipient.
Do not be swayed by the contents of this book, they are but one person's view of their own journey. We all have our own journey to make and there are many good books on people who were and still are mediums. Read about Mediums such as Maurice Barbanell, Harry Edwards, Ursula Roberts, Coral Polge, Frank Leah, Eileen Roberts and Tony Stockwell to name only a few.
Read some of the Teachings of Silver Birch or White Eagle to help give you spiritual insight. Note this is Spiritual not Spiritualist although personally for me there is no difference. If you are interested in the Spiritualist Philosophy, read about Emma Hardinge Britton who received the original Prinicples of Spiritualism from Spirit.
I know mediums from all walks of life and all religious and philosophical backgrounds and they all have one thing in common - a desire to be of service to all regardless of their ethos or world view.
Research the topic of Mediumship for yourself and find your own truth.
This book is a warm and engaging series of stories and discussions of the author's experiences as a practicing natural born medium and healer. If you have ever wondered what these things are all about and how they are done, then this is the book for you. At the same time, if you think you already know what these things are all about, then you will discover there is so much more that you do not know.
The author writes with great humility and compassion. Her writing is honest and straight forward without any embellishments. I recommend it most highly.
I first read this book on Authonomy and was so enlightened, I knew immediately that this was a person with a true gift. Yes there are many out there who do not have giifts and prey on others, but they are also the ones who would not question themselves to make absolutely certain that the messages they were receiving were true, real, and important. I highly recommend this book for people who want a better understanding, and to truly enjoy the life a gifted and humble person...
Yes, Lorraine is the real deal. And in this book drawn from her own experiences, she establishes both what she finds credible and what she finds doubtful. Anyone who has explored the metaphysical community will know that there is a lot of misinformation mixed with a modicum of substantial information. Whether true hucksters, overenthusiastic misinterpretations or superstitious patter, it can be very difficult separating the grain from the chaff. This Lorraine does quite admirably, and what she is left with in the end is the real meat of the matter.
I truly enjoyed reading this book and learned so much from Lorraine's great style in writing. Thank you Lorraine for writing this great book and actually all your books-they all have answered my questions and helped me along on this journey.
